What would you call US Senator Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, a far-left ideologue, or a sober-minded centrist? Among many, the current US President Donald Trump and his Republicans seem unsure.
When the Democratic party was mulling over selecting Sen. Harris to contest Mr. Trump, she decided to join the eventual contestant, Joe Biden. Supporting Biden now 77, who can barely serve one term, Sen. Harris’s intent attracted scrutiny.
According to GovTrack, Sen. Harris is one of the top 100 liberal senators called by The New York Times, a pragmatic moderate; the Fox News, a radical.
In this article, we focus on Sen. Kamala Harris’s stand on critical issues.
Senator Harris on Public Safety
In the whole of the US Senate, Ms. Kamala Harris and her party are always supportive of enforcing legal reforms.
As Joe Biden’s running mate for the Election, Sen. Harris talks about “reimagining how we do public safety in America” following Mr. Biden. The latter does not support defunding police like most liberal democrats.
Kamala believes that the death penalty is unconstitutional, and therefore in 2004, she declined the death penalty of a miscreant shooting down an officer. In 2015, she refused to urge officers deputed for an investigation of a deadly force in California to wear spy-cameras.
Sen. Harris is being critiqued for legalizing marijuana at the national level, contrary to Mr. Biden since her Francisco office managed over 1,900 cannabis convictions. Sen. Harris calls herself a “progressive prosecutor” and “top cop” rankled both the liberals and the conservatives.
Sen. Harris’ Extreme Gun Control Agendas
The National Rifle Association informs of Sen. Harris’s “extreme gun control agendas,” as Sen. Harris openly proposed the “mandatory buyback” of gun manufacturers in her attempt to contain assault weapon manufacturing.
In the running for the White House, Sen. Harris resolved that if she became the president, she would sign an executive action to enforce stricter gun control. Along with most of the Democrats, Sen. Harris wants to level up regulations around gun manufacturing and their manufacturers.
Sen. Harris’ Affinity toward the Affordable Care Act
Back in 2018, in an article in the New York Times, Sen. Harris wrote about her mother suffering colon cancer and her support of Obama’s Affordable Care Act. She also shared her support of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2017 Medicare for All. She believes that “…healthcare should be a right, but the reality is that it is still a privilege in this country. We need that to change.”
Later in the media, it is reported that Sen. Harris backtracked on her support for eliminating the private healthcare system in the US because Joe Biden doesn’t support Sen. Bernie’s Medicare for All. Collectively Harris and Biden proposed fortifying Obama’s landmark Affordable Care Act.
Tax-Payer Funded Healthcare for Immigrants
Senator. Kamala Harris, born to parents of Indian origin, much like other Democratic contenders, has pledged to actualize citizenship rights of millions of undocumented immigrants in the US.
According to CNN, in June 2019, Sen. Harris announced an immigration plan proposing “executive actions to remove the threat of deportation of millions of undocumented people.”
According to VOX, in 2017, Sen. Harris stated, “I will not vote for an end-of-year spending bill until we are clear about what we are going to do to protect and take care of our DACA young people in this country.”
With a big heart, Senator Harris has proposed to offer tax-payer funded healthcare support to undocumented lives crossing the border without paper.
US Senator Kamala Harris’ Social Manifesto
In terms of Sen. Harris’s take on Climate change, she co-sponsored the Green New Deal that advocates overhauling of the US economy to combat climate change, which for the Conservatives is a “socialist manifesto.”
In her stance on climate change, Sen. Harris, along with democratic socialist congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, introduced a climate equity bill to rate how environmental laws determine the wellbeing of lower-income communities.
Ms. Harris also wants the federal legal committee to summon the fossil fuel industry to curb fracking. She has, in fact, outlined a $10tn climate plan for net-zero emissions by 2045.
Ahead of Waren & Sanders, Sen. Harris on Women’s Rights
Sen. Harris supports taxpayer-funded abortions in favor of lower-income women along with her other contenders.
Ahead of the left-wing Democratic contenders Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders who backed a three-month paid leave bill,
Sen. Harris offered a six-month paid family leave for all workers for personal or medical emergencies, including relief for the victims of domestic violence.
If you are still waiting for more, here’s our top take; US Senator Kamala Harris would like large companies close the gender pay gaps or face fine through mandatory equal pay certification.
